Ogden Sierra Club -- ORV Maps

In an effort to assist the U.S. Forest Service in better educating off-road vehicle users, the Ogden Sierra Club is pleased to offer three maps of popular ORV recreation areas within the Ogden Ranger District. To download the maps, simply click on the links below. Each document is a two-page (front and back) pdf file of approximately 400-500 kilobytes. To view and print the maps you may need to install Adobe Reader or a similar program. The maps are in black and white and can be printed on virtually any printer.

Usage terms. These maps are copyright 2004 by the Ogden Sierra Club. Permission is granted to download and print these documents for personal use, and to print multiple copies of the documents for noncommercial use, provided that each map and the associated text is reproduced in its entirety, with no modifications. The two pages (map and text) should be printed on two sides of the same sheet of paper whenever possible. If this is not possible, the two pages should be attached in some other way. Electronic reproduction of the maps, or distributing them from other web sites, is not permitted.

You can also obtain printed copies of the maps from Big Boys Toys (2529 N Highway 89, in Pleasant View) or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to Ogden Sierra Club, Attn: ORV maps, P.O. Box 1821, Ogden, UT 84402. The Sierra Club will gladly distribute the maps in bulk to ORV dealers, ORV clubs, and others who can pass them on to the riding public; contact Dan Schroeder (801-393-4603, ) for more information.

New: The Wasatch-Cache National Forest has recently posted a pdf version of its Ogden-Logan travel map on its web site; you can download the map from this page (scroll down to Ogden & Logan area, Vehicle Travel map). However, this map is a 3 megabyte download and is very akward to print unless you first crop it in a program like Photoshop.

FAQ

Are these official Forest Service travel maps?

No, but the routes shown as open on our maps are the same, for the areas covered, as those shown on the official Ogden and Logan Ranger District Travel Map (1997 printing). The only exceptions are two minor routes that have been closed in recent years to allow revegetation of badly damaged areas. Forest Service staff have reviewed the maps for accuracy and found no errors.

What about all the other trails that don't appear on these maps?

Some are on private land that is closed to public use. Those on the National Forest have been legally closed to motorized travel since the 1980's. Unfortunately, many users have been unaware of these closures and the Forest Service has not had the resources to keep all closed routes posted.

Can't I legally ride my ORV on existing trails, as long as they're not posted as closed?

No. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest has a "designated routes only" policy, which allows motorized travel only on routes that are specifically designated for such use.

What if I see a sign that contradicts the information on one of these maps?

Some signs indicate seasonal closures during wet conditions; please respect these closures. As of spring 2004, there were also a few misplaced "open" signs in the Monte Cristo area. The official Travel Map, upon which our map is based, takes precedence over these incorrect signs.

Can I pull my vehicle off the road/trail to camp or picnic?

Yes, as long as you stay within 150 feet of a designated travel route, and as long as you travel off the designated route only for this purpose. Please make every effort to avoid damaging vegetation.

What about all the campsites that are more than 150 feet from the road?

Driving to those sites is illegal. You may still walk to them, of course.

Aren't there any ORV play areas where I can ride cross-country?

Not in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. You might check regulations at some of Utah's BLM areas and State Parks.

Where can I get a copy of the official Travel Map?

At the Union Station Visitor Center at 25th Street and Wall Ave. in Ogden, or the Logan Ranger District office at 1500 East, Highway 89. (See also the link to the online version just above this FAQ.)

Where can I get maps of hiking/biking trails in the Ogden area?

The Ogden Sierra Club publishes a pocked-sized trail guide, Outings Guide to the Ogden Area, with maps and descriptions of nonmotorized trails and routes. It is available for sale through several local shops, and directly from the Club at our outings and events.

Why is the Sierra Club producing its own ORV travel maps?

We believe that most ORV users want to obey the law and protect the environment. From our conversations with ORV users, however, we've learned that many do not know where they're allowed to ride. By providing these free and convenient travel maps, we hope to prevent some of the damaging ORV use that has occurred in these areas in the past.

Why doesn't the Sierra Club post these maps within the National Forest, and put boxes of them at trailhead kiosks?

We have offered to do these things, at our own expense, but the Ogden District Ranger has declined to give us permission to do so.
