The Skyline Trail follows the ridge tops of the Wasatch front range from Pineview Reservoir to Willard Basin. It is divided into northern and southern segments by the North Ogden Pass road. Both segments of the Skyline Trail are open to motorcycles, as is Lewis Peak trail that runs westward from southern segment.

This group of photos covers the North Ogden Pass trailhead parking area, the Skyline Trail from North Ogden Pass southward to the Lewis Peak turnoff, and the spur trail to Lewis Peak itself. Only this documented route is plotted in red on the maps; further field work is needed to document the condition of the rest of the Skyline Trail and the connecting nonmotorized trails.

Closeup of map on sign board, which seems to imply that all the trails shown are open to motorcycles. In fact, the two southern spurs ("city view") off the Lewis Peak trail do not appear on the travel map and are therefore closed to motorcycles.

The top of the western segment of the Pioneer Trail at North Ogden Pass. This trail is closed to motorized use and used extensively by equestrians, who helped realign it a few years ago. Now the Forest Service is proposing to open this trail to motorcycles.

The Lewis Peak trail can be crowded on weekends, even without motorcycles. On this beautiful Saturday we encountered eight other hikers (besides our party of five), seven on mountain bikes, three on horses, and no motorcycles. Here and along most of the trail, the path is a narrow single-track that shows no sign of braiding or widening. (Coordinates are approximate.)

Parallel tracks, becoming overgrown. The trail segment between here and peak 8110 is in much worse condition than the rest of the trail from North Ogden Pass to Lewis Peak. This is probably because of the steepness and the northern exposure, where snow and muddy conditions last longer than elsewhere.
