Motorized Use Database (MUD) for the Ogden Area
This database contains more than 1500 photos of motorized travel routes in the Ogden area.
Most of the routes are in the Ogden Ranger District of the Wasatch-Cache National
Forest, though some are on nearby state and private land.

Further explanations and usage terms
- This web site is for use by the Sierra Club, allied organizations, and public land managers.
If you were not given the password by an authorized Sierra Club representative, you are not
permitted to view this site; please exit now.
- All photos are by Dan Schroeder, Ogden Sierra Club, unless otherwise noted. Please
obtain permission before copying or distributing any photo, map, or other data.
- This database is a work in progress.
More photos will be added as they become available and as time allows.
- There are many locations where multiple photos fall within a pixel's width on the index maps.
In these cases, clicking on the index map will take you to the first photo at that location, in the
order in which they are listed in the table below. Use the "Next" link to view the other photos at
that location, or browse them in the index table.
- The routes shown in red on the index maps are mostly plotted from
GPS tracklogs. The maps do not distinguish between single-track trails, ATV trails,
Jeep trails, and improved roads; you'll need to look at the photos to determine a route's width and
condition. Nor do the maps distinguish between routes that are legally
open to motorized use and those that are closed; please refer to the current Ogden Ranger District
Travel Map. In a few places the maps show parallel routes where there is actually a single route
that was logged twice with differing GPS errors.
Some existing routes may be omitted from the maps.
- All coordinates are in UTM zone 12, NAD 27 CONUS datum.
This is the same datum used on the 7.5-minute topographic maps of this area. One-kilometer
UTM grids are visible (black lines) on most of the topographic index maps. To convert coordinates
to NAD 83 or WGS 84, subtract 65 meters from the easting value and add 205 meters to the northing value.
- The maps, screen-size and thumbnail photos, and web pages for viewing them
were all generated automatically using a Perl program.
Many thanks to Kevin Walker for providing code and technical assistance. Additional help and inspiration
came from Jim Catlin, Great Old Broads for Wilderness, the Bear River Watershed Council,
and a long list of computer books, web sites, discussion lists, and programming experts.
If you would like to generate a similar web database of photos with GPS coordinates, please
contact Dan Schroeder, dschroeder at weber dot edu.
