Restrictions on Designation of Wetlands
Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: sb183
Sponsor: Sen Sheldon Killpack (R-Syracuse)
Legislative Session: 2007 General Session
SB 183, sponsored by Sen Sheldon Killpack (R-Syracuse), would prohibit municipalities from protecting wetlands not recognized as wetlands by the Army Corps of Engineers. Recent Bush Administration changes and a federal court case have eliminated some wetlands from Army Corps protection. This is a pro-developer bill to prevent cities and towns from picking up the slack.
Status
Unfortunately, this bill came out of the senate with momentum. Only four senators voted against (23-4-2). But on the house side, it picked up bipartisan opposition; two Republican representatives voted nay. Let's let the governor know how important it is to protect wetlands.
Action Needed
Please call the governor ASAP to ask him to veto this bill.
